The Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska
The Mendenhall Glacier is a MUST SEE when you are visiting in Juneau, Alaska. Hiking the Photo Point Trail came very highly recommended from a friend who had been there the previous summer. I’m going to let the gorgeous pictures do a bit of the selling on this one.
As I didn’t have my own set of wheels for transportation when I was in Alaska, I got dropped off at the Visitor’s Centre by taxi. At once, I saw I had made the right decision. There was limited parking on site, which was filled up with other travellers and tourist buses. At the park entrance there were several park rangers who were very helpful in determining what trail adventure I wanted to take. Several of the trails were 1-5 hours in length. I would have loved to have tackled these, but daylight was fading, storm clouds were rolling in, and hopefully I have learned my lesson about hiking alone.
The Hike – Photo Point Trail
The Photo Point Trail is a very short and scenic route that winds around to give you the best views of both the Mendenhall Glacier and the Nugget Pond Falls. Viewing the glacier is a bit surreal considering in the middle of the summer you are looking at such a large mass of ice. Each year the glacier continues to retreat due to the rising global temperatures. The Nugget Pond Falls are quite strong and give off a nice mist if you get close enough. This will be in addition to the rain that frequents the area. Even though I experienced this hike as a solo traveler, there were lots of tourists around who were more that willing to take my picture. This site is also one of the excursions available for the cruise lines.
I Heart Alaska..
I would definitely recommend this hike for everyone. With the price tag being free, you can’t really go wrong. It’s an excellent photo shoot opportunity and the trail is easy enough that all ages and abilities can enjoy it. Although, you may not find this experience to be life changing, I can definitely assure you will be in awe of all the beauty a trip to Alaska brings.
